Motherwort, The Lionhearted

A Chinese Motherwort (Leonurus japonicus) that I had the honor of growing in Sims, NC in 2015. Notice the sharp spikes around the flowers.
In continuing with the theme of summer heart herbs I wanted to talk about Motherwort. The Latin name for the most commonly used species of Motherwort is Leonurus cardiaca or Lion Hearted. It's many names speaks of its many uses. Motherwort is a superb heart tonic. It is a cardiac nervine which means it relaxes the heart and helps it deal with side effects of stress like high blood pressure and palpitations from anxiety. It has been said that there is no better herb for strengthening and gladdening the heart.

Along with the heart, Motherwort is particularly good for women troubles. It brings blood flow to the uterus so it is excellent for bringing on stuck moontimes helping with cramps and spotty flow. Due to Motherwort's ability to bring on menses it is not safe to use during your pregnancy. However it has been used during the last few days to prepare the womb for delivery.

Emotionally it is helpful at gently easing some of the negative feelings the heart holds on to like grief, resentment, anger, and frustration. As it does this it brings in good feelings of acceptance and understanding. It is exceptionally good for these types of feelings that come with menopause. Motherwort can help with the melancholy, restlessness, insomnia, and emotional side of croning while also helping with hot flashes aka power surges!

Spiritually it has been used for protection of families and to bring in peace to the home. What mother doesn't need that!! I find it quite eye opening that most of the herbs of the heart have a mixture of gentle action with big spikes, like the thorns of Hawthorn or the spikes that form near the flowers of Motherwort. The Doctrine of Signatures tells me these herbs are for protection. For women and mothers, we often carry a lot of peoples burdens as healers, lovers, and caretakers. It is good to know there are allies to help make sure our hearts stay safe while we do our great work required on this planet.

From my heart to yours,
Misty
